Abstract
A SOCIOLOGY OF PLANNING: It is the opinion of the author that a sociology of planning should not aspire to the status of a special sub-discipline within sociology, with its own peculiar theory and method. A sociology of planning would need to utilize a variety of perspectives, including role theory, occupations, community, to develop an understanding of this social activity in its ramifications. Three aspects of planning from a sociological perspective is looked at in this paper: Firstly, the history of town and country planning, secondly, the relation of planning practice to urban growth processes and patterns, and thirdly, the place of planning in the institutional structure of society. Attention is also been given to the training of planners in South Africa with special reference to the place of sociology in the training programme. Finally, the focus is on the different research institutes concerned with sociological research with special reference to their activities in the field of planning.
