Diorganotin(IV) Derivatives of Thiophene-2-carboxylic Acid

Abstract
Two series of complexes [R2SnO2CR']2O [1:1] and [R2Sn(O2CR')2] [2:1] (R = CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9, n-C8H17, R' = 2-thienyl) have been prepared by treating thiophene-2-carboxylic acid with diorganotin(IV) oxides in 1:1 and 2:1 (ligand : metal) molar ratio. All the complexes are monomers and are soluble in all the common organic solvents at room temperature but crystallize out at low temperature. Structures are assigned on the basis of IR and 1H NMR spectral studies. The 1:1 complexes are dinuclear with a Sn-O-Sn bridge which joins two five-coordinate tin(IV) atoms in a trigonal bipyramidal structure. The 2:1 complexes possess a distorted trans octahedral geometry. Sulphur does not coordinate.
