Metal carbonyl chemistry. Part XXIII. Dichlorocarbene formation during the reactions of octacarbonyldicobalt with chlorinated hydrocarbons

Abstract
Trapping experiments uing cyclohexene have demonstrated the intermediate formation of dichlorocarbene in the reactions of Octacarbonyldicobalt with the compounds CXCl3(X = Cl or Br) or CBr2Cl2 in hexane solvent which give [ClCCo3(CO)9] as the major product. Evidence is also presented for the formation of radical intermediates during these reactions, and the mechanism of formation of the cobalt clustercompound is discussed in the light of these findings.
