Abstract
Three cases oi catheter recoil and whipping from the descending aorta into the ascending aorta and left ventricle and 1 case of whipping from the ascending aorta into the descending aorta are described. This seems due to the small size (O.D. 0.084 in.) and flexibility of the catheter employed. It is also due to the high-pres sure injection necessary to deliver an adequate bolus through this catheter and to the position of the catheter with fixation by the subclavian artery, thus allowing pivoting about the aortic arch. Although no complication resulted in these 4 patients, a definite serious risk exists, and it is recommended that arch aortography via the brachiocephalic vessels be performed with larger catheters. With use of a No. 8 French catheter (O. D. 0.105 in.), there were no instances of catheter whipping about the aortic arch. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
