Ascent of Sap in Plants

Abstract
Eight weeks before presentation, a previously healthy 40-year-old businessman sustained a minor cut on his right elbow while on a water slide located on the eastern shore of Maryland. Although he noted minor pain and bleeding, he finished his day by swimming in the ocean. Two weeks later, progressive erythematous, painless swelling had developed on the same elbow, restricting movement of the elbow. The patient's doctor aspirated the lesion and gave him a course of amoxicillin/clavulinic acid. However, within 2 weeks, the swelling and redness restricted movement as severely as they previously had (figure 1).
