Abstract
In 8 homes for old people, each of 374 residents–categorized by mental designation as “rational” and “confused”–was recorded as regularly occupying a specific seat in one or other of the 34 communal sitting-spaces studied. The seats and sitting-spaces were scored as to their apparent “desirability,” and the scores inspected to examine the propositions that (a) rational and (b) male residents occupy the desirable seats and sitting-spaces. While the data provide support for the first of these anticipated types of differential appropriation of space, they do not uphold the second. Keywords
