Abstract
A rapid, inexpensive and relatively simple screening test for determination the acute toxicity of chemicals to the microorganisms of activated sludge was evaluated. Hydrolysis of fluoresceine diacetate (FDA) by microbial esterase was adapted for that purpose. In the presence of test chemicals the efficiency of the reaction of hydrolysis showed significant dose-dependent decreases. The results expressed as IC 50 were comparable with datas others authors for 2-MCP, 2,4-DCP, 3,5-DCP but were different for 4-MCP. Based on the results of these studies the inhibition of FDA-esterase activity proved to be an accurate and reproducible method of determining the toxicity of chemicals to activated sludge. Keywords
