Abstract
Many organizations have developed 'constructive' responses to the pro tection and support of employees affected by HIV/AIDS. While offering a step forward from the discriminatory actions of some employers, con structive policy has its own difficulties. An analysis of the underpinning assumptions of different forms of constructive policy suggests that it is necessary to question the effectiveness of approaches which are rooted in doctrines of 'secular individualism'. The resulting neglect of structural inequality risks sustaining, albeit unintentionally, responses to the epi demic that are of partial effectiveness and normatively biased. Keywords
