Renovascular Anatomy

Abstract
No branch of the renal artery anastomoses with another. For practical purposes neither the renal artery nor any of its branches has a readily available collateral circulation. The venous drainage of the kidney differs in several important respects from the arterial supply. Segmentation of the kidney is based entirely on the arterial supply. Some 20 to 30 per cent or more of kidneys have supernumerary arteries. Multiple and extra- hilar renal veins are less common than similar arteries.
