Abstract
Early investigators noted that administration of highly purified ACTH preparations induced thymic involution, splenic atrophy, and lymphopenia in several species of animals. ACTH was not effective in adrenalectomized animals, and lymphatic tissue atrophy could be maintained for long periods by continuous treatment with large amounts of ACTH or cortisone. 1 In this chapter the influence of ACTH and related peptides, of adrenal hormones on immunocytes, and immune phenomena will be reviewed.
