Abstract
Rydberg ions with orbital dimensions up to approximately 1000 a0 are found to traverse thin gas targets fairly undisturbed, indicating relatively small ionisation cross sections sigma i. Theoretical estimates which take into account screening of target nuclei reveal that sigma i(n) becomes asymptotically independent of principal quantum number n.Keywords
