Onset of Addiction: A First Attempt at Prediction

Abstract
Predictors of early heroin addiction were investigated. Natives of low social class origins were, as predicted by social structure and anomie theory, more likely to be addicted when young. Social class had little impact on age of addiction among migrants. Blue-collar migrants were strikingly less likely than blue-collar natives to be addicted when young; a nonsignificant trend in the same direction was found for white-collar respondents. Commitment to traditional values was discussed. Contrary to expectations based on Moynihan, [human] family intactness was unrelated to age of addiction.
