EFFECT OF NUTRIENT LIMITATION ON THE RNA/PROTEIN RATIO OF SEVERAL RUMEN BACTERIA

Abstract
The RNA/protein ratio of stationary phase cultures of seven predominant rumen bacteria was affected by glucose and nitrogen limitation (P < 0.01). Nitrogen limited cultures had the highest ratio (0.52 across all species), followed by cultures grown with adequate energy and nitrogen (0.28) and glucose-limited cultures (0.12). Key words: RNA/protein, nutrient limitation, rumen bacteria
