Abstract
The great social and economic impact of the weather continues to fuel the age‐old quest for a way to predict future meteorological conditions. Enormous payoffs in areas such as agriculture, health and energy use await improved climate forecasting. Greater knowledge of the climate system would also contribute to our understanding of a wide range of phenomena—from the causes of the ice ages to the effects of decreased stratospheric ozone. To predict future states of the atmosphere one must evaluate the complicated interactions between air, sea, ice, land and powerful external forces. Keywords
