Abstract
A field experiment was conducted in calcareous soil (pH 8.4, free CaCO3, 34.2% and DTPA‐extractable Fe, 4.2 ppm) to assess the role of G. albidus in iron nutrition and N2 fixation of Cicer arietinum Fe‐efficient (Pant G 114) and Fe‐inefficient (BR‐77) genotypes with and without Rhizobium strains IC‐76 and RG‐3. Application of G. albidus with Rhizobium strains to the genotypes produced significant differences in N2ase activity, leghaemoglobin content of nodules and active and total iron contents of nodules, roots and shoots compared with the uninoculated control. Interaction between Pant G 114 X IC‐76 X G. albidus showed the highest active iron content and N2ase activity of nodules while low content of total iron was noted in this combination.
