Initial detection of coarctation of the aorta: an opportunity for the radiologist

Abstract
Of 65 consective patients over the age of 1 yr who had surgery for coarctation of the aorta, only 9 were referred to the hospital with the correct diagnosis. A retrospective review of 48 preoperative chest radiographs showed 90% had abnormalities of the aortic arch or descending aorta that were described with coarctation. Since coarctation is clinically important and totally correctable, more familiarity with its radiographic features is desirable. Radiologists have an pportunity to recgnize the condition initially during evaluation of hypertension and heart murmurs.
