Abstract
Internode length, pigmentation [chlorophylls a and b, .beta.-carotene, fucoxanthin] and receptacle size and shape were examined over a range of exposures to wave action for the seaweed A. nodosum (Fucales, Phaeophyta). Characters related to growth rate showed peak values at intermediate exposures, whereas other characters displayed monotonic trends from extreme shelter to extreme exposure. This is discussed in relation to the pitfalls which may result from the common practice of comparing only the 2 extremes of an exposure gradient. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
