Abstract
The magnetisation of a palladium film on a nickel substrate is calculated within the Ginzburg-Landau model. The effect of Ni-Pb interaction is characterised by a logarithmic derivative of the magnetisation at the Ni-Pd interface and the effect of the free palladium surface is described by a surface extrapolation length lambda of Binder and Hohenberg (1972). The magnetisation in Pd film is determined in the linear-response approximation and the accuracy of this method is checked by numerical solution of the Ginzburg-Landau equation. The calculated dependence of the total magnetisation induced in palladium on the thickness of the palladium film is compared with the measurements of Gradmann and Bergholz (1986). The surface enhancement of Pd deduced from the measurements is discussed.
