Abstract
The magnetic susceptibility of thorium carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides has been measured at temperatures of − 190°, − 76°, and 22°C. All the compositions exhibited a small, temperature-independent paramagnetism. The data are compared with the results of electrical property measurements on these compounds. It is concluded that whereas the electrical properties are primarily determined by the conduction electrons, the magnetic susceptibility is primarily a property of the holes in the band structure. Keywords
