Abstract
The failure of a notched, unidirectional, boron-epoxy composite sub jected to simple tension along the fibers and perpendicular to the notch is studied. Tension tests are performed and the composite is analyzed using a finite-element crack program. The finite-element model takes into account the effects of layering and heterogeneity in the crack-tip region. Stress- intensity factors are obtained from the crack program and compared with the corresponding one for an isotropic material. Notch insensitivity and the failure mode are discussed and the fracture toughness of the test material is determined. Keywords
