Abstract
During the 1960s, New Left common sense eagerly cast West Germany in the role of the free world's beachhead against communism. This identification coupled with that linking West Germany to the Nazi era was certainly an emotional propaganda coup within the growing student movement. Yet images of that sort hardly deepen the analysis of historical complexities. On the contrary, certain questions could no longer be raised once the roles were assigned. Since the Left in the Federal Republic defined its enemy — the state with its capital in Bonn — as an anti-Soviet outpost, no serious widespread critique of Eastern European societies was developed. Keywords
