Abstract
Expts. were conducted with a micro-electrode system which made possible direct measurement of saliva pH in the mouth. Results during control periods showed a negative correlation between H-ion concn. and rate of flow of saliva. In a 2d series of expts. the effect of acidifying and alkalinizing drugs on salivary pH was tested. It was found that there was a small though statistically significant rise in H-ion concn. after a 5 g. dose of NH4Cl, and a fall after a 10 g. dose of NaHCO3. The relationship between H-ion concn. and rate of flow was maintained throughout. The physiol. and clinical significance of the recorded changes is discussed. Keywords
