Abstract
Recently Davies (1990a) proposed the use of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), a well-known statistical technique, to test for periodicity. This proposal has been severely criticized by Nemec & Nemec (1991), but unfortunately their arguments are based on a serious misinterpretation of the work of Davies. The purpose of this paper is to reaffirm the usefulness of ANOVA, and to remove any ambiguities concerning its range of validity.
