SPONTANEOUS PNEUMOTHORAX IN ANTHRACOSILICOSIS

Abstract
Interest in the pulmonary dust diseases has been stimulated by their inclusion in many states among the compensable occupational diseases. The pathologic clinical and roentgenologic aspects of the pneumoconioses have been extensively described. Spontaneous pneumothorax complicating pneumoconiosis has been reported from time to time, but there appear to be no definite data as to its frequency. Furthermore, there are no studies comparing the incidence of the condition in simple pneumoconiosis with the incidence in pneumoconiosis associated with tuberculosis. Most reports concern pneumocotic tuberculosis, and Ickert1has stated that according to his experience and that of Redeker pneumothorax is found in pneumoconiosis only when the pneumoconiosis is associated with tuberculosis. During the past few years, however, spontaneous pneumothorax occurring in cases of pneumoconiosiswithout complicating tuberculosis has been reported with increasing frequency. Hofbauer2in describing such a case discussed two similar ones which had come to his attention.
