Abstract
Medullary sponge kidney is a disorder in which dilated collecting tubules (1 to 7.5 mm in diameter) are found in one or more renal papillae.1 In the absence of complications, it is a benign, asymptomatic condition in which glomerular filtration is normal and proteinuria and hypertension are absent; there may be an associated mild impairment of urinary concentration or acidification, but these are of no clinical concern. However, serious illness may result from two frequent complications — urinary infection and nephrolithiasis — which may occur together or separately.
