Abstract
Emotional aspects are crucial to the management of diabetes mellitus. By using a holistic I psycho-bio-social - approach most if not all healthy and ill functions of the body will become expressed in the psychological functions and vice versa. The actual treatment system favors a more dualistic psyche/soma approach, where somatic diseases are treated and handled by somatically oriented physicians. The aim of this article is to update our knowledge of the psychiatric/psychological aspects of diabetes mellitus with the possibility of adding this more varied approach to the treatment and rehabilitation of these patients in order to increase their life-quality without giving up an optimal medical treatment. The impact of crises, somatopsychological states, and personality on these factors is discussed, and practical propositions for a general improvement of the regimen for diabetics are made.
