Hemodynamic Effects of Two Contrast Media: Hypertonic Sodium Chloride and Hypertonic Dextrose

Abstract
In a series of eight dogs the hemodynamic effects resulting from intracarotid injection of 50% sodium diatrizoate and equally hypertonic sodium chloride were compared. In another group of eight dogs, 80% sodium iothalamate was compared with sodium chloride and dextrose solutions of equal osmolarity. Little difference in response was found between the contrast media and hypertonic sodium chloride, but hypertonic dextrose produced appreciably less response. This suggests that with the contrast agents tested, the sodium ion plays a greater role in the production of side effects than hypertonicity.
