Abstract
The main purpose for the use of an indwelling catheter is for relief of urinary retention, most often in patients with prostatic infravesical obstruction. Because of the many disadvantages of an indwelling catheter, a new intraurethral, self-retaining catheter has been designed for insertion into the posterior urethra, as an alternative to the indwelling Foley catheter in patients with urinary retention caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. The initial experience with this intraurethral device in 10 patients with urinary retention is reported.
