A natural two-qubit gate for quantum computation using the XY interaction

Abstract
It depends on the two-qubit interaction Hamiltonian of a given physical implementation which two-qubit gate can be realized easily. The CNOT gate is of special interest. With certain interaction Hamiltonians more than one two-qubit operation is required to realize CNOT, for example with the XY interaction. Here we propose a two-qubit gate for the XY interaction which combines CNOT with the SWAP operation. By means of this gate quantum circuits can be implemented efficiently, even if only nearest-neighbor qubits can be coupled.
