Abstract
The bacula of the male long-tailed weasel (Mustela frenata) are of 2 types, immature and adult. They may-be distinguished by appearance and wt. The immature baculum develops into that of the adult at the time sexual maturity is reached, when the animal is about 1 yr. old. Immature weasels were castrated and when autopsied several months after the usual time for assumption of sexual maturity still showed the immature type baculum. Adult weasels were castrated and after several months no regression of the baculum was found. Immature weasels implanted with pellets of testosterone exhibited at autopsy bacula intermediate between the adult and immature types. Another series of immature weasels was castrated and implanted with pellets of testosterone propionate. When autopsied after 2 months the bacula were essentially of the adult type in both wt. and appearance. Keywords
