Abstract
To the Editor: A year ago I fell asleep during midday while driving and demolished my car. It was eventually determined that I was one of an estimated 50 million people with sleep apnea. A permanent tracheostomy was done so that I could breathe through the tube at night and plug the tube during the day. It sounds simple enough, but the problems involved were such that it took a year to find solutions that would allow me to return to nearly normal function.
