The Role of Microorganisms in Acid Mine Drainage

Abstract
An unidentified bacterium has been found in acid mine drainage which is involved in the oxidation of ferrous to ferric sulfate. A 2d bacterium which is morphologically and physiologically similar to Thiobacillus thiooxidans has been isolated repeatedly from the acid mine drainage of some bituminous coal mines. This latter organism may be involved in the oxidation of the sulfur and the sulfur compds. to H2SO4. In the study of abatement of stream pollution it is suggested that the analysis of the relation of certain microorganisms to the formation of the H2SO4 in the mine might be most profitable.Keywords
