Abstract
By measuring the shear mechanical transfer function of the smectic-A phases of octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) and octyloxycyanobiphenyl (8OCB) in the low frequency range from 1 Hz to 1 kHz, it was demonstrated directly that the Martin-Parodi-Pershan shear viscosities η2 and η3 of smectic-A liquid crystals do not diverge as 1/ω at low frequencies ω contrary to the case of bulk viscosities. Keywords
