Abstract
"Fibrosis of the sphincter of Oddi" has recently received much attention as a cause of biliary tract dysfunction,2,5-7,14 but published photographs of sections taken at operation are difficult to interpret, and at the time this study was begun there had been no extensive autopsy investigation of the pathology of the ampulla with this lesion in mind. Even the histology of the ampullar region is not described in standard modern textbooks of histology and pathology, though it was clearly described by V. Patzelt in Von Mollendorff's German textbook of histology15 in 1936. This paper records a study of the histology of the ampulla of Vater in a series of autopsies at which no biliary or pancreatic disease was found, compared with those from subjects who had stones in the gallbladder, who had had the gallbladder previously removed for cholecystitis, or who had evidence of pancreatitis.
