Abstract
Experimental interview surveys to test alternative procedures for collecting crop and livestock data by area sampling were conducted annually in the Southern and North Central region of the United States since 1954. Improved methods were developed for identifying farm operators in area sampling units. A "closed-segment" approach, which involves recording data on crops and livestock only for tracts of land (or portions of such tracts) wholly within the sampling unit, has been worked out as an alternative to using the "farm" as the unit of observation. This avoids errors caused by failure of interviewers to define "farms" properly and duplication of reports on the same land by landlords and tenants. Working procedures are simpler and reported data can be verified more easily. Sampling errors are also reduced because of the upper limit imposed upon data for a sampling unit by the confines of the unit.
