Treatment of dry eye by punctum patch

Abstract
The systematic treatment of dry eye by occlusion of the lacrimal canaliculi has been shown to be very effective for decades. Recently a new technique - the punctum patch-enabled the occlusion of the lacrimal punctum eliminating 2x2 mm of the epithelium that surrounds the punctum, and covering this zone, including the punctum orifice with a fragment of the conjunctiva taken from the adjacent conjunctival cul-de-sac. In II patients with moderate dry eye, one or the two lacrimal points of the worst eye were occluded with the punctum patch technique. In one eye a change was not seen, because the occlusion patch became detached spontaneously three days after being placed, before healing. In four eyes in which only one punctum was occluded, there was an evident subjective and objective improvement. Of six eyes, in which both puncta were occluded, four showed great improvement, and in two an epiphora discomfort appeared, which necessitated reopening of one punctum, restoring lacrimal drainage.
