Abstract
Bangladesh (under the title East Pakistan) formed part of the state of Pakistan from 1947 to 1971. Its secession as an independent state was recognised by the United Kingdom only in 1972. As a result, census questions separating Bangladeshis from Pakistanis were not included in the British census until 1981. The paper attempts to measure the development of the Bangladeshi community in Britain for the period before direct census data became available. Sources include the Labour Force Survey, Home Office immigration statistics and the census Longitudinal Study which allows a retrospective measure of Bangladeshis who were present in Britain in 1971 but classified as Pakistani. Analysis of immigration and unemployment data shows an unexpected positive correlation.
