Lactate Dehydrogenase Isoenzyme Polymorphism in a Patient with Secondary Carcinoma of the Liver

Abstract
Summary. The serum of a patient with terminal carcinoma of the oesophagus and extensive liver métastasés exhibited markedly raised lactate dehydrogenase and 2-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase activities, though other enzyme levels were only slightly elevated. Electrophoretic studies confirmed the presence of enormously increased quantities of the anodic isoenzymes, LDH(1) and LDH(2). Each of these main bands was accompanied by additional bands which were slightly less anodic. Tumour tissue taken from the liver at autopsy showed an isoenzyme pattern similar to that of the serum. One piece of tumour tissue, however, showed an anomalous series of five isoenzymes in which the LDH(5) and the hybrid isoenzymes migrated significantly faster than their normal counterparts. The findings in this case are in striking contrast to those usually found in malignant disease and are consistent with polymorphism of the M subunit of the enzyme.
