Abstract
The electronic spectra of Bin clusters in solid Ne and Ar matrices are studied by absorption and laser induced fluorescence techniques. The Bi2 ?→? spectrum appears to be unperturbed by the solid medium. A second, slightly lower lying excited electronic state may also be due to Bi2. Spectra belonging to another bismuth cluster, most likely to Bi4 are also observed and analyzed. The vibrational frequencies of the emitting species are determined. The spectrum is consistent with a Td structure for the tetramer, but shows no evidence of Jahn–Teller distortions. Keywords
