4—THE GEOMETRY OF BULKED NYLON YARNS IN WEFT-KNITTED FABRICS

Abstract
A three-dimensional geometry of bulked nylon yarns in plain, weft-knitted fabrics is derived by comparing fabric stitch density and thickness for bulked and unbulked yarns. A measure of yarn bulk in fabrics is defined and related to yarn relaxation. The effect of yarn dtex∗ is included by a modified definition of cover factor. Equations relating yarn bulk and stitch shape to cover factor give constants which characterize the dimensional properties of bulked yarns and allow the length, width and thickness of plain fabrics to be calculated from the yarn dtex and stitch length. Practical applications of the theory are given.
