Glucose Concentrations in Blood Plasma and Parotid Saliva of Individuals with and without Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
Three-hour oral glucose tolerance tests were performed simultaneously on the blood plasmas and parotid salivas of 26 diabetic and 26 non-diabetic individuals aged 12-70 years. Glucose concentrations in the parotid salivas of each individual diabetic and non-diabetic varied with plasma glucose levels at a much lower order of magnitude. On an average diabetics tended toward slightly higher parotid glucose concentrations than non-diabetics, reflecting their elevated plasma glucose levels, but there was consider -able overlapping of parotid glucose concentrations for individuals between the two groups. Parotid glucose tolerance curves of individual diabetics frequently were in the concentration ranges of those of non-diabetics. Therefore, it was concluded that parotid fluid cannot be useful in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.
