Abstract
The Arctic may be viewed in various ways: a geographic component of the planet, a climatic influence, a global transportation route, a source of natural resources, a geopolitical arena, a philosophic challenge, and as a biome. In the overall interest of the future of mankind, the last two should receive highest priority. Any approach to the Arctic should take into consideration its economic potential and its influence on both the indigenous populations and immigrants, as to their respective needs and wishes, potentials for physiological and technological adaptation, and inevitable cultural clashes and methods for achieving mutually satisfactory intercultural accommodations. If satisfactory biological and social solutions to these fundamental questions cannot be achieved, nature and the Arctic itself will probably react to the detriment of all of mankind.
