Genetic Analysis of Open Field Behavior in Swine1

Abstract
Data on open field score (OF) of 1853 Duroc and Hampshire pigs were obtained from a swine irradiation project at Iowa State University. OF is the number of squares, marked on the floor of a strange pen, into which a pig stepped in the first 2 min. when put into the pen alone. Heritability of OF was 0.16. OF was significantly affected by season of the year. The effect of breeds and the interaction of sex by season of the year approached significance. OF had a significant phenotypic correlation of − .23 with weight at 154 days, but was uncorrelated with weights at younger ages or with backfat thickness on the live animal. Copyright © 1967.
