Abstract
It is often convenient to use Gaussian quadrature techniques to calculate integrals for variational calculations. A basis set may be constructed which is orthonormal under the summations used to approximate the integrals. For this set, the Hamiltonian matrix is Hermitian, in spite of the matrix elements not being calculated exactly. Keywords
