Abstract
Urorosein occurs in increased amounts in the urine of diabetics. It has been generally assumed that it is a beta:beta'' diindolyl-methene-dye. This substance has now been synthesized, and it has been shown by paper chromatography and examination of the absorption spectrum that urorosein is not identical with it. Four methods of synthesizing beta:beta''-diindolyl-methane have been studied; this is then oxidized with ferric chloride. The oxidation of indole-3-acetic acid is also described. The isolation of the urorosein base and of a derivative, presumably its methyl ester, is described. Keywords
