Abstract
Thirty-seven kindergarten children were interviewed regarding their contact with, knowledge of, and beliefs about animals. The principal expectation of the study, that young children's beliefs about animals would be egocentric and subjective was confirmed. There was also evidence of the beginnings of a more decentered and generalized view in which animal capabilities were differentiated from those of human beings. Keywords
