Abstract
SUMMARY: Previous experiments on the effects of chloramphenicol and the tetracyclines on the biosynthesis of tryptophan in Escherichia coli have been extended using a number of tryptophan auxotrophs. The formation of indole, anthranilic acid and 5‐dehydroshikimic acid is inhibited by chloramphenicol and oxytetracycline. There is some variation among different strains with respect to the sensitivity of the aromatic pathway to the antibiotics. It is suggested that the antibiotics possibly interfere in some reaction leading to the formation of 5‐dehydroshikimic acid. The present results provide further evidence that the mode of action of chloramphenicol and of the tetracyclines are related in some way. Keywords
