The chemistry of terpenes. Part VIII. Some volatile neutral products of the oxidation of (+)-car-3-ene with permanganate

Abstract
The structure, proposed in 1927, of the carenone obtained by the permanganate oxidation of car-3-ene has been fully confirmed as that of car-3-en-5-one. Careful examination of the neutral products of this reaction has revealed the presence, in smaller amounts, of several other volatile oxidation products whose structures are derived by physical and chemical means. These other components include the controversial car-3-en-2-one whose stable existence has been proved beyond doubt.
