Abstract
Rather than embark on an expensive reorganisation and training programme, Ashford Hospital has opted for integrated care pathways. Sue Johnson explains Patient focused care is commanding a lot of attention in the current climate of providing a health care service which puts the patient at the centre of the care cycle. In order that such patient centred care can be delivered, patient focused hospitals are springing up around the country. Such hospitals aim to bring the services of the hospital to the patient; in other words each specialist unit has its own laboratory or X-ray department, and the staff within that unit arc multi-skilledprofessionals. Such care is co-ordinated and documented through the use of multidisciplinary care protocols. Thus the service would focus around the patient, rather than the traditional system where the patient follows the service. Keywords
