MEHIXENE HYDROCHLORIDE AND PARKINSONIAN TREMOR

Abstract
Sixteen patients with persistent Parkinsonian tremor of various etiologies (but in no case drug-induced) volunteered for a double-blind controlled therapeutic trial of the drug methixene hydrochloride, in dosage of 45 mg/day. Tremor was measured at the wrist with a special transducer and recorded on a moving strip of paper. Fourteen patients completed the trial and statistical analysis failed to show any advantage of the drug over placebo (p> 0.1). Among the side effects noted, dry mouth and dizziness were the most significant. Possible reasons for failure of the drug to show any significant value are discussed.
